Camera-based measurement of relative image contrast in projection displays
2013
International audience; This research investigated the measured contrast of projection displays based on pictures taken by un-calibrated digital cameras under typical viewing conditions. A high-end radiometer was employed as a reference to the physical response of projection luminance. Checkerboard, gray scale and color complex test images with a range of the projector's brightness and contrast settings were projected. Two local and two global contrast metrics were evaluated on the acquired pictures. We used contrast surface plots and Pearson correlation to investigate the measured contrast versus the projector's brightness and contrast settings. The results suggested, as expected, the proj…

The theory of geometric structures on a surface with nonempty boundary can be developed by using a decomposit, ion of such a surface into hexagons, in the same way as the theory of geometric structures on a surface without boundary is developed using the decomposition of such a surface into pairs of pants. The basic elements of the theory for surfaces with boundary include the study of measured foliations and of hyperbolic structures on hexagons. It turns out that there is an interesting space of measured foliations on a hexagon, which is equipped with a piecewise-Iinear structure (in fact, a natural cell-decomposition), and this space is a natural boundary for the space of hyperbolic struct…
Objectively measured far vision impairment and sarcopenia among adults aged ≥ 65 years from six low- and middle-income countries
2021
Background:\ud \ud There are currently no studies on visual impairment and sarcopenia. We investigated the cross-sectional association between objectively measured far vision impairment and sarcopenia in a nationally representative sample of older adults aged 65 years and over from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).\ud \ud Methods:\ud \ud Cross-sectional, community-based data from the study on global ageing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed. Far vision acuity was measured using the tumbling E LogMAR chart and classified as: no vision impairment (6/12 or better); mild vision impairment (6/18 or better but worse than 6/12); moderate vision impairment (6/60 or better but worse t…
Jet fragmentation transverse momentum distributions in pp and p-Pb collisions at √s, √sNN = 5.02 TeV
2021
Jet fragmentation transverse momentum (jT) distributions are measured in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed with the ALICE tracking detectors and electromagnetic calorimeter using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4 in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.25. The jT values are calculated for charged particles inside a fixed cone with a radius R = 0.4 around the reconstructed jet axis. The measured jT distributions are compared with a variety of parton-shower models. Herwig and Pythia 8 based models describe the data well for the higher jT region, while they underestimate the low…
Unobserved tourism
2015
Having more reliable statistics is essential for policy-makers to be able to make effective decisions. Nevertheless, measuring the number of tourists in a given destination is not an easy task. After reviewing the main problems affecting official statistics on tourism, this paper proposes a general framework by formalizing a theoretical model in which tourism nights and trips in a given destination are broken down into observed and unobserved components, according to the European system of tourism statistics. The main approaches related to the measurement of unobserved tourism are discussed, and some empirical findings in Sicily (Italy) are presented in order to highlight the actual magnitu…

Real-life impact of early interferonβ therapy in relapsing multiple sclerosis
2009
Objective: Recent findings support greater efficacy of early vs. delayed interferon beta (IFN) treatment in patients with a first clinical event suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of early IFN treatment in definite relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and to assess the optimal time to initiate IFN treatment with regard to the greatest benefits on disability progression. Methods: A cohort of 2,570 IFN-treated RRMS patients was prospectively followed for up to 7 years in 15 Italian MS Centers. A Cox proportional hazards regression model adjusted for propensity score (PS) quintiles was used to assess differences between groups of patients with early vs. dela…

The apparent losses due to metering errors: a proactive approach to predict losses and schedule maintenance
2014
The effects of water meter age and private tanks on the apparent losses due to metering errors were evaluated by experimental and theoretical analyses. A monitoring campaign on a small district metered area (DMA) was carried out to determine the causes of apparent losses and implement a numerical model. Metering errors are affected by the flow rate passing through the meter, which is dependent on the network pressure and water level of the private tank. A node model that reproduces the effect of private tanks was coupled with EPANET and was applied to the DMA. The proposed modelling approach was used to identify where apparent losses are higher and to schedule maintenance. The model predict…
